Angels

I wrote this song
It wrote itself
Or maybe you wrote these words
You stood in the shadows
Like the hermit all alone
I relished my own solitude out in the night
Among stars I thought might grow to be my love
An angel's calling song brought me in
And you stood there, waiting for me
One day I stepped down from a cloud
Just to see the world
I found a black hole instead
I nearly turned back
Until there was a ray of light
And you were that shine
So I stayed
Slowly someone untied my ropes
Until my edges were frayed
And then you braided the loose strings back together
Life was the moon: waxing and waning
The cycle changed
Suddenly I had to say goodbye
I went to you, waiting for me again
And your face lit up like the sun
And I no longer will be astonished by the stars
You looked at me
Like I was the manifestation of an unearthly goddess
Though unlike a goddess
I tripped over my words
But you smiled nevertheless
With such sincerity and love
As though memorizing my face before I was gone
You stared directly into me
And my frozen heart liquefied at your feet
Now I'm gone
Now I'd rather lose sight and sound and touch
Than lose the angel that you are to me
